By school age, your child should be able to:

  • follow one and two step directions

  • listen to short stories and answer questions about what he/she heard

  • use pronouns I, me, he, and she correctly

  • use spatial concepts words such as "on" and "behind"

  • speak in full sentences using primarily correct grammar

  • ask questions to obtain information

  • answer where, how, how many, when, and why questions

  • talk about past, future, and imaginary events

  • understand time/space concepts such as "before" and "after", "first, second, last"

  • initiate a conversation and stay on topic

  • speak clearly enough to be understood by people outside of his/her family

By the age of 8, your child should be able to:

  • use all speech sounds correctly in his/her conversational speech
